As a society, we seem to be exchanging the virtue of humble curiosity for the vice of smug contempt.
How can this be healthy?
Humble curiosity seeks to understand those with whom it disagrees. Smug contempt assumes only ill intent from its “adversaries.”
Humble curiosity recognizes its limitations and says, “I don’t know, but I’d like to learn.” Smug contempt thinks itself omniscient or (more modestly) merely “capable of omniscience.”
Humble curiosity loves pouring its heart and soul into others for their own good. Smug contempt can see no further than its own “glorious” reflection, especially while “serving” others.
Humble curiosity accepts differences among people as a reality. Smug contempt forces these differences on each person’s reality.
Humble curiosity is willing to wrestle with moral ambiguities. Smug contempt pounds its chest in moral superiority.
Humble curiosity remains steadfast in victory and defeat. Smug contempt yields to its most bestial urges the moment it tastes either one.
No person or party has a monopoly over the prior or can claim complete immunity from the pull of the latter.
Humble curiosity leads one ever closer to the glory of God. Smug contempt drives one ever closer to the flames of hell.
During this tumultuous time, ask yourself this question: “Which one am I allowing to lead me?”
Sincerely,
A Tamed Cynic
